Depression is a very common human experience and is likely to adversely impact your functioning sometime throughout your life. It does not discriminate between peoples, societies and identities.

You may have heard about how depression affects other people, especially when they experience it for a long time. They may be sad for days without end, and their particular “glow” has vanished. These symptoms are often attributed to particular experiences, situations, or events that have occurred or are ongoing. Seeking treatment through depression counselling is essential to alleviating these symptoms.

The Two Important Questions

Although a psychologist uses a list of specific questions to help them diagnose depression and determine a person’s state of being, answering the two questions below with “yes” generally suggests that a person has some degree of mood instability:

  • Are you feeling blue, sad, or down for the past month, and/or possibly longer?
  • Are you slowly losing interest or starting to stop enjoying things that you normally find interesting and pleasurable?

These responses are signs that you, a friend or a relative should seek a psychologist for professional help

Other symptoms of depression may include:

  • A lack of energy
  • Sleep and appetite disturbances
  • Sexual dysfunction or a growing lack of interest in sex
  • Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and sadness
  • Excessive or inappropriate feelings of guilt
  • Feeling withdrawn or disinterested in people and social situations
  • Irritability
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Rumination and indecisiveness
  • Negative thinking, and/or thoughts about suicide and death.
  • Self-destructive behavior
  • Drug and alcohol abuse

If you feel as though depression is negatively affecting your life, then our team would like to help.

Helping Cope

The symptoms of depression need assessment through counselling in order to qualify their severity.

For mild to moderate depression, management is usually provided through counselling interventions such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) with mindfulness
  • Motivational interviewing and psychodynamic psychotherapy

We find that clients also benefit from our home-based “mood shifters” program. This incorporates movement, nutrition, sleep hygiene, music therapy, ionized air and a multitude of mindful activities.

For severe depression, treatment typically requires a combination of medication and cognitive behavioural therapies. Professionals agree that using a “combination approach” or mixture of the two generates the most positive results.

This combination approach touches on the:

  • Capability of medication to support neurological functioning and help mitigate physical symptoms including loss of appetite and sleep
  • Provision of a means for people not to fall into a trough of despair
  • Development of better problem solving, cognitive, and coping skills through cognitive therapy
  • Development of positive relationships and better interaction within a supportive network of people

At Direct Focus Solutions we believe in taking a multidisciplinary approach to depression therapy. Our team are trained in various disciplines that help us provide top-of-the-line psychological services for you.
