Neurofeedback and Biofeedback

Direct Focus Solutions has joined with the Neurofeedback Treatment Centre to deliver quality and experienced services. The Centre has been supporting individuals in the Sydney region and remotely for fifteen years and has experience in assessment, monitoring and tailoring brain-training programs. At Direct Focus Solutions’ biofeedback clinic in Sydney, we offer Neurofeedback (NFT), biofeedback, heart rate variability and qEEG assessment for your neurotherapy needs.

What is Neurofeedback (NFT)?

Neurofeedback training is a non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive process that can help address a variety of psychological and neuro-physical conditions. In our clinic we also use NFT to optimise brain functioning to support peak performance in the corporate and academic sectors as well as elite sports performance. It can be used to reduce anxiety related to performance, improve sleep, reduce mind chatter and increase focus.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a non-invasive way for people to learn how to control involuntary functions such as heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure. This approach has been used to decrease chronic pain associated with tension, manage anxiety and assist with other physiological symptoms that impact daily living.

Common questions

What is EEG biofeedback / neurofeedback (NFT)?

NFT is a way to train brain activity; it is biofeedback for the brain. NFT / EEG biofeedback is a treatment used for people with many conditions including Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD), concentration problems, anxiety, Autism, learning disabilities, depression, sleep disorders, migraines, headaches, behavioural disorders, emotional disturbances and PMS, amongst other conditions by targeting the brain deregulation that can underly the symptoms. It can also be used to aid people with organic brain conditions, including cerebral palsy and seizures.
Through a combination of NFT / EEG biofeedback treatments and quality focused psychological strategies, Direct Focus Solutions offers you the most proactive solutions possible.

How does NF / EEG biofeedback work?

NFT / EEG biofeedback is used to help a person train their brain to correct and regulate brain waves. When information about a person’s brainwaves is made available to them, they can learn to change them. It’s a type of brain workout.

What is our treatment process?

Firstly, we start your NFT / EEG biofeedback treatment with an initial assessment. This provides the Direct Focus Solutions team with an understanding of your medical history as well as behavioural and emotional goals so can we develop suitable training protocols. Testing is also done at this time where one of our trained technicians takes measurements of your brain’s electrical activity. Sensors are placed on your scalp and ears to record brain wave signals much in the same way as a doctor places a stethoscope on a patient’s chest to detect a heartbeat. Your brain wave signals are then translated into sounds and graphics in the form of a video game. During subsequent training sessions, you will focus on visual and audio stimuli for periods of between 7 minutes to 30 minutes depending on your training program.
For example, if you want to train your brain to be more focused instead of distracted, every time your brain moves into an alert state, you’ll hear a beep and see graphics on the screen. We can also train you on your favourite DVD. The more you use the correct brainwaves (relaxed, calm, focused), the faster the video game moves, and vice versa. In this way, you can change your brain waves and thereby train your brain to reach mental states previously unachievable or with more consistency.
Through NFT / EEG biofeedback training, your brain learns to become more efficient, flexible and resilient.

How long does it take to work?

It’s impossible to predict how many sessions a person will need as each brain and each case is different. However, improvements are usually seen within two to five sessions. Simple cases can require 30 sessions, other cases can take 50 or more sessions, depending on the severity and complexity of the symptoms. Numerous studies have shown that clients often continue to improve after sessions end. As mentioned, in most cases once the treatment is completed, benefits are retained.

How often do NFT sessions have to be?

You can start with 1 to 3 sessions per week. However, if you begin with more frequent sessions, the faster your progress will be. Remember, you’re re-training your brain and this takes time and patience.

What results can be achieved?

Improvements to a wide range of symptoms can be achieved through NFT / EEG biofeedback treatment, including difficulties with:
Concentration and/or staying on task
Restlessness or hyperactivity
Short-term memory
Impulsiveness / self-control
Depression / low mood
Reading, learning, and academic performance
Social skills
Low energy or motivation
Irritability and meltdowns
Sleep difficulties including chronic insomnia
Chronic pain and more

Are there side effects?

NFT / EEG biofeedback should have no adverse side effects, if administered from experienced and responsible clinicians. Over 250 published scientific studies and articles on NFT / EEG biofeedback report no harmful effects following NF / EEG biofeedback treatment.

From what age can NFT / EEG biofeedback be administered?

From the age of 2½ to 3 years. However, for younger children and those with complex developmental issues, we facilitate an integrated programme with our occupational therapy team to get them ready for brain training.

How effective is NFT / EEG biofeedback?

In general, NFT / EEG biofeedback is effective in 75-80% of cases.

How much does it cost?

Your initial assessment costs $275, while each session after costs $105. You may be eligible for private health rebates.

What is Heart Rate Variability (HRV)?

HRV is the variation in between heart beats. In general, the higher the variable between beats, the more relaxed the body is. Measuring heart rate variability can indicate when fatigue or stress is present and becomes physiological marker for how well the body recovers. HRV training usually includes audio and visual stimulus to teach calming techniques such as breathing and mindfulness. These techniques can then be generalised in different daily activities and/or high-pressure situations. We also can add this to your brain training and psychological sessions.

What is a QEEG Assessment and Report?

A quantitative EEG (QEEG) recording and report provides an analysis of your brain wave patterns that are compared to other people your age. This can give indicators of abnormal cognitive or emotional states. A QEEG will pick up on brains that are anxious, depressed, inattentive, traumatised, injured, or have learning difficulties and show how this affects brain function and behaviour. It can help detect some of the reasons behind those conditions.
This helps intervention strategies and especially enables more accurate NFT support.
